Thornton Heath is the latest ward Labour party to conduct its selection process for candidates for next May’s Town Hall elections.

The five-strong short-list that is being presented to members on Monday to choose their three candidates in the Labour stronghold is made up entirely of serving Croydon councillors.

As well as the three Thornton Heath councillors elected in 2010, Pat Clouder, Matthew Kyeremeh and Louisa Woodley, also short-listed are councillors Donna Gray and Karen Jewitt, who were displaced from their current wards, Bensham Manor and Woodside respectively, in their selections recently.

Some Labour members in the high membership Thornton Heath ward report being lobbied to vote for the three candidates that are from Croydon’s various black communities, at the expense of Clouder and Jewitt.

Thornton Heath is the ward with the largest population of black Caribbean descent in London, according to the 2011 census.
