Lessons learned at Warlingham’s School of Hard Knocks

Warlingham rugby club is set to feature on Sky television’s School of Hard Knocks again next month.

The Hamsey Green club has just hosted a youth version of SoHK for a third year, with coaching visits from Sky Sports regulars Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood, culminating with the scheme’s novice under-15 players in a tournament against teams from Warlingham and Wallington grammar school.

School of Hard Knocks is a social inclusion charity which runs courses that use sport to tackle issues surrounding unemployment, anti-social behaviour, crime and health. The course, run over eight weeks, teaches responsibility, motivation , teamwork, respect and reliability, and was supported by Warlingham coaches on a voluntary basis.

After the tournament, prizes were awarded by England 7s scrum half Ollie Phillips, fresh from the recent World 7s where England reached the final only to be beaten by New Zealand.

Ken Cowen, head coach for School of Hard Knocks, said, “Warlingham rugby club has been very supportive of the charity over the past three years and we are very grateful for their hospitality.

“All the boys on the course have benefited from the principles we teach on the course, and what’s more, several of them will now continue with their rugby at Warlingham having realised the massive benefits of team sport – especially rugby.”

Warlingham’s youth rugby teams train every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm and boys and girls of all ages are welcome. All the coaches are fully RFU qualified.
