CQC report tells us nothing we did not know about Mayday

CROYDON COMMENTARY: The hospital inspectors have been and gone. Now, says DAVID CALLAM, time is overdue for re-modelling the A&E department of our local hospital

As a volunteer of more than 20 years at Mayday and an in- and out-patient over the past decade, I think I know the hospital reasonably well.

There are no surprises in the report, but I think Sir Mike and his team have assessed the hospital well and highlighted areas that I would expect.

Poor organisation in out-patients is something I have had occasion to complain about myself. A&E concerns are not surprising either: the present arrangement is a temporary one that has been left to cope as best it could for many more years than originally intended.

The Mayday Road entrance needs totally remodelling, as was the clearly stated intention until some minister or other diverted the money elsewhere.

It would be nice to have a Salford Royal in the borough: but it’s reassuring to know that we are reasonably safe in our local Croydon hospital.

I await subsequent reports from the new-look CQC with great interest, expecting to see continuous steady improvement overall and Sir Mike’s support for a new A&E wing.
