Philipa Harvey, one of the National Union of Teachers’ national officers, and Ted Knight are among the key note speakers on June 28 when the Croydon Assembly stages an “Education in Crisis” meeting at Ruskin House in Croydon.
The Conservative Government has backed off from compelling all schools to become academies immediately, but it still intends every school should become an academy by 2020.
According to Knight, the former leader of Lambeth Council who chairs the Croydon Assembly, “At the same time there is a crisis in teacher recruitment, there are funding cuts that will harm children’s education, there’s a huge shortfall in the number of school places that are needed, and there is chaos and confusion around primary testing.”

The next debate being staged there by the Croydon Assembly and the Croydon TUC is on the European Union referendum, on Thursday, June 9.
Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), has already been announced as the lead speaker on behalf of a remain vote.
Now, it has been announced that Eddie Dempsey, a national executive member of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), will be speaking for a vote to leave the EU.
