Warlingham to host Saracens’ summer rugby camp, Aug 30-31

RUGBY ROUND-UP: Warlingham is hosting its final kids’ rugby summer camp of the holidays at Hamsey Green next week, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 30-31.

For boys and girls aged from five to 13, the organisers already have around 40 youngsters booked to take part, but still have vacancies for those who want to make sure that they are rugby fit for the new season.

So whether your son or daughter were inspired by seeing Rugby 7s at the Olympics, or perhaps are about to move to a school where rugby is the main autumn term sport, next week’s camp could be the ideal introduction.

Run by the coaching and youth development team of Saracens, the online cost of the two-day camp is £54.

Warlingham RFC is just off Limpsfield Road at Hamsey Green, south of Sanderstead.

WARLINGHAM’S senior XV’s first pre-season match takes place tomorrow, Saturday August 27, at Hamsey Green, against Old Dartfordians.

Kick-off at 2.30pm, with the club bar open at lunchtime. Entry for spectators is free, and car parking is available on site.

TWO FORMER John Fisher School pupils have been signed up to play rugby professionally.

Lock forwards Kieran Treadwell and Dom McGeekie, both products of the Harlequins academy, have joined Ulster and London Scottish respectively.

They follow an impressive list of professional and international players who have been developed from local schools and clubs, including Chris Robshaw, Danny Cipriani, Kay Wilson, Elliot Daly and Paul Sackey, himself a Fisher old boy.

Treadwell, an England under-20s international, moved to Belfast this summer.

McGeekie, a one-time Fisher head boy and captain of the school’s first XV, is staying a little closer to south London with Scottish, who play in the second tier of English rugby. A sports coaching graduate from Cardiff Met University, McGeekie will also be working with the coaching set-up at Warlingham.

“We are really pleased and excited to secure Dom’s services for the coming season,” Paddy Dennien, Warlingham’s head coach, said.

“Despite his young age, Dom has a huge amount of experience playing at the top levels of our sport. Combing that with his degree in coaching and his positive approach to the game he is already proving himself as a natural coach and motivator.”

Senior training at Warlingham is every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7.30pm at Hamsey Green, with touch rugby sessions, for a wide age range and for those looking to get fit, start at the same time on Wednesday evenings.
