South Norwood hardware store is ready to shut up shop

Emertons, South Norwood‘s long-established hardware store, is finally shutting its doors after 117 years of trading.

Shoppers have only a short time to make use of South Norwood’s long-established Emerton’s store

The store, in Station Road, has been suffering considerable hardship in the last couple of years, made worse since a 150 per cent rise in the “pavement tax” charged by the local council for using the space outside the shop, where they had always had their wares on display prior to the huge increase.

Sam Patel, the store manager, said he can no longer afford to pay this, and since losing his outside display area he has suffered a drop in the number of customers.

Since Malcolm Brush, Patel’s long-standing colleague, suffered a fatal heart attack while working at the store five weeks ago, the decision has been taken not to continue struggling to keep the business going.

Patel needs to get rid of all his stock so he can close the store. Everything on sale is at a reduced price, so go and pick up a bargain, so take a last chance to visit a well-loved store that has been part of South Norwood’s community since 1900.
