Politics professor gives free talk on the election, and Trump

Next month, Inside Croydon is holding Talking Inside Croydon, a unique, sometimes serious, often off-beat and eclectic set of talks by experts, authors and novelists about their work, and the news and the issues of the day.

As you might expect, all Talking Inside Croydon events will have a strong Croydon element to them.

The talks will be free entry (though booking is essential), and all will provide an opportunity to ask questions of the speaker.

And we are starting on June 9 – the day after the General Election – with a talk from an American professor of politics who has studied every General Election in Croydon for the past decade, and get from him and his team of students some immediate analysis on how the election played out in the borough’s three constituencies and across the country.

Dr Bob Beatty will also talk about last year’s US Presidential elections, and Donald Trump.

Dr Beatty is professor of political science at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he also does work as the political analyst for KSNT-TV and writes columns for The Topeka Capital Journal.

Bob Beatty: has been studying Croydon elections since 2005

He has been a visiting professor and guest lecturer in the Far East, including Hong Kong, where his expertise has been used by the US State Department in lecture tours of Russia, Mongolia and China, and he has worked as a foreign observer at the 2009 Mongolian presidential election.

He is author of several books and newspaper articles and has been the producer and writer for three documentaries that aired on public television in the United States: British Political Parties (2004), The British Parliament (2005), and The Kansas Governor (2005).

Last year, Dr Beatty covered the US presidential campaign as a KSNT correspondent and spent two months in Iowa on the campaign trail and attended both the Democratic and Republican national conventions and the campaign debates in St Louis and Las Vegas.

Since 2005, Dr Beatty has been visiting Croydon at election time to see first-hand how the democratic process works in Britain, and he will be in London for the final days of the 2017 General Election campaign. This will be the first time that Dr Beatty has made himself available for such an immediate study of a British election, and Inside Croydon‘s loyal reader will get the opportunity to meet the professor and ask him questions at Talking Inside Croydon.

Places are limited, so make sure you book yours as soon as possible.

Entry is strictly ticketed.
