Making drama out of crisis: King of Egypt comes to Croydon

“Escaped psychiatric patient Kevin Haggerty is not pleased about his diagnosis, even less pleased about being on a section of the Mental Health Act, and distinctly upset about being told he is not the reincarnation of the pharaoh Ramses II. On his way to Egypt, via the Tesco Express, he stumbles across the nemesis to all his plans: Millie. Together they embark on a journey that will change their lives forever.”

Well, that’s the spiel offered about the next theatrical production at the Spread Eagle Theatre: Kevin, King of Egypt, written and performed by stand-up, poet and psychiatric nurse, Rob Gee.

Gee’s stage work borrows heavily from his 12 years as a professional mental health nurse working in Britain and Australia, in acute psychiatry, child and adolescent units, drug and alcohol services, helping those with eating disorders and in psychiatric intensive care.

Of Kevin, King of Egypt, Gee says, “This show couldn’t have been written without input and guidance from people on both sides of the psychiatric fence. While it would be a lie to say any resemblance any of the characters have to anyone living or dead is coincidental, the majority of what you’ll see and hear is pure fiction.”

Kevin, King of Egypt is being performed for one night only on Friday October 6 in the theatre space above the Spread Eagle Pub on Croydon High Street. The performance starts at 7.30pm, tickets are £10. Book online here.
