Stephen Oxford has thoroughly researched the South Norwood Hill area and in this talk relates the amazing prophesies of one local resident and the fascinating stories behind many others.
In his talk, Oxford will explain the local connections to faked documents in the British Museum, Charles Dickens, D’Oyly Carte, the Fighting Temeraire, our first Croydon councillor, a “Lunatic”, an outspoken baptist minister, a consul to India, East India Company traders, a holder of the Chevalier De La Legion D’Honneur, one of the most important ornithologists of the Victorian era, a chairman of Lloyds Insurance, several millionaires, the actor who died on stage, the missing man assumed dead for 20 years, a Lieutenant Colonel who fought in the Sikh Wars, a manufacturer of mathematical instruments, the “inventor” of the ink duplicating machine, a seaman who survived a shipwreck off Land’s End, a witness in the “Bravo Murder” case… and many more.
