O’Connell puts himself up for questions from Purley Guild

Steve O’Connell is the guest speaker tomorrow at the Purley and District Townswomen’s Guild.

Steve O’Connell: used to pocket £118,000 a year from public bodies

O’Connell is expected to speak about his work as the London Assembly Member for Croydon and Sutton. So don’t expect the talk to last very long.

For a time, hard right-winger O’Connell was – according to the Daily Mail – the most overpaid councillor in the country, as he pocketed generous allowances from City Hall and from Croydon Town Hall, where he is a councillor for Kenley.

These days, as a Conservative and therefore on the opposition benches, O’Connell’s income from public sources has been reduced, from six figures to a mere £70,000-plus. In his talk tomorrow, O’Connell might be able to offer advice to the good members of the Townswomen’s Guild on how to make ends meet in such strickened circumstances.

At City Hall, he chairs the Police and Crime Committee, and is a member of the Confirmation Hearings Committee, the GLA Oversight Committee and the Transport Committee.

The meeting starts at 2pm in the Lounge, United Reformed Church, 906 Brighton Road, Purley CR8 2LN.

New members are welcome – “first meeting free, so you can try before you buy”, says the Guild.
