The Townswomen’s Guild has a varied range of topics for its monthly meetings

No, it’s not a picture taken at a racy Ann Summers party, but something from the most recent meeting of Purley and District Townswomen’s Guild.

At their April meeting , Carol Harris talked about Putting on the Ritz, fashion between the wars. Harris has been collecting clothes of the period for years, and has fond memories of the 1980s, when designer fashion from the period could be bought for a song. And buy it she did. She illustrated her talk with stunning dresses and jackets, and modelled a jacket and skirt and several hats.

There was more than met the eye. Harris explained the social and technological background that underpinned the changes in fashion in the period (remember Rayon?.

And of course the underwear that underpinned (or not) the garments our mothers and grandmothers wore.

The Guild meets on the first Tuesday of every month at the United Reformed Church Purley, from 2pm to 4pm, usually with a speaker, and including light refreshments. There are about 20 members, so it’s easy to get to know people and make friends.

June 5: Games plus tombola
July 3: Talk by Tim Kidd: Soho – with pictures
August 7: Talk by Hilary Osborn: I was a Blue Badge Guide
August 21: London walk, talk and lunch, led by Harry Frankland
September 4: Talk by Ian Curry: Weather
October 2: Talk by local charity Waggy Tails and fundraising for them.
November 6: Talk and demonstration by Sandra Winter: The Magic of Handbells
December 4: Christmas Party with music
