Croydon Council announced yesterday that it is to mark Emergency Services Day tomorrow by hoisting a special flag outside the Town Hall at 999 – 9am on the 9th day of the 9th month.

The annual event is to celebrated the massive contributions made by the 1million people who work or volunteer in the emergency services across the country.
Tomorrow will be the first time that such a ceremony has been staged, and Croydon is joining local authorities, fire, police and ambulance stations, HM Coastguard and RNLI stations across the country in marking public gratitude for the service and dedication shown by the emergency services, 24/7 and 365 days of the year.

Recognition for what is known as 999 Day has arisen out of a groundswell of support and thanks for the dangerous and life-saving work carried out at disasters such as last year’s Grenfell Tower fire and the 2016 Croydon tram crash, as well as the daily “shouts” attended by the emergency services, offering help and support when it is needed most and often at times of crisis.
The flag will be flown outside Croydon Town Hall on Katharine Street. The council press release (only issued at 4.20pm on Friday) says that, “Members of the public are welcome to join the flag raising ceremony, which gets underway at 9am.”
