There will be no tram services from Sandilands through to New Addington this weekend, and for the next two weekends, “due to essential works”, Transport for London confirmed today.

This follows the two-week closure of the central Croydon loop during February.
And it is in addition to the “significant closure” of a large part of the tram network for “vital” works that is due to begin on Friday, March 29 (Good Friday) and last until April 24, a period in which no trams will run from East Croydon to New Addington, Elmers End or Beckenham Junction.
Track closures and engineering works are occurring with increasing frequency, reflecting the need to overhaul the 20-year-old tram infrastructure. Separately, TfL has put out for tender to replace its 24 oldest trams, which have been operating since the network opened in 2000.
A source at TfL told Inside Croydon about the latest set of closures, including the month-long shutdown of the network east of East Croydon, “We have reviewed all options, including whether deferring this closure to August was possible, but due to the works being essential and unavailability of specialist contractors, we have to undertake the works at the earliest opportunity.
“Should the ‘switches and crossing’ units fail before the closure, there is a risk of needing to carry out a large, long-term partial closure of the network but with no notice for planning of resources and materials.”
Of the March 29 to April 24 works, they said, “This closure will largely take place during the Easter school holidays when customer numbers are lower, with engineering teams working around the clock to minimise disruption as much as possible.”
The next closures will be from Sandilands on the New Addington branch line, via Lloyd Park and Gravel Hill, on these dates:
- Saturday March 9 and Sunday March 10
- Saturday March 16 and Sunday March 17
- Saturday March 23 and Sunday March 24
“This is so essential works can be carried out to improve the tramway and infrastructure,” TfL said.
“We are sorry for the disruption this may cause,” said Navid Golshan, London Trams general manager.
TfL suggests passengers should use local bus services. “Check before you travel and allow more time for your journey during the closures.”
