Second M25 closure confirmed for weekend of May 10 to 13

National Highways has confirmed that the M25 will be subject to another closure for major works between Friday May 10 and Monday May 13.

No through road: March saw the first closure of the M25 since 1986. Now it will happen again in May

The London orbital motorway will be completely closed between Junctions 9 at Leatherhead and 10 at Wisley for major improvement works, the second time this has taken place this year.

The closures will have impact on other parts of the motorway, potentially with increased traffic and the possibility of jams. Journeys on the A23 and M23 and to Gatwick and Heathrow airports will likely be affected.

Motorists have been advised by National Highways to travel only “if absolutely necessary”.

The same five-mile stretch of the M25 was closed over a weekend in March – the first time there had been a scheduled daytime shutdown of all lanes on the motorway since it opened in 1986.

The planned closure next month will provide different, longer alternative routes, which will differ for taller vehicles and other traffic.

During the closure, there will be four diversionary routes, including clockwise from Gatwick towards Heathrow for most traffic and overheight vehicles.

The other two diversionary routes will be anticlockwise from Heathrow towards Gatwick for most traffic and overheight vehicles.

“Drivers listened to our advice last time, which reduced motorway traffic levels by over two-thirds and meant delays were limited,” said a spokesperson for National Highways.

“Our advice again is please only travel if absolutely necessary and make sure you give yourself extra time if you do choose to use the M25.”

A new bridge consisting of 68 beams, each weighing 16 tonnes, and a further four beams weighing 40 tonnes are to be installed as part of project to improve safety and reduce pollution.

The improvement scheme, which forms part of a £317million upgrade to the motorway, will see an increase in the number of lanes to attempt to make journeys safer and a new junction layout to improve traffic flow.

A further three closures of the M25 are planned between July and the end of the year.
