It is half-term week, which for rail passengers means a whole load of disruption to their regular services across south London.
Just the ticket: Adrian Lee has been passing on the information about this week’s engineering works on south London’s rail lines
Signalling upgrade work started at the weekend and is due to continue until this Friday, November 1, “which will result in major changes to train services across south London”, according to operators Southern.
In total, 11 stations will have no Southern services and 16 stations will have no Thameslink services during this week.
Adrian Lee has worked on the railway for 15 years, trying his hand at a variety of roles. He’s now part of the Streatham Hill ticket office team and is reminding passengers about the engineering work.
“I first joined the railway in 2009 thinking it would be a stop-gap while I studied part-time to become a physiotherapist.
“I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and have been working my way up ever since then. I’ve held lots of different roles on the railway, from my first job working on the gateline at London Bridge, to progressing to team leader, and then becoming the station manager, which was very exciting because I was involved in milestone moments like the London 2012 Olympics and the opening of The Shard.
“In 2021 I started working at the Streatham Hill ticket office, because I’m passionate about helping customers and I like to inform people of the latest developments on the railway, like the south London engineering work. I’ve spent a lot of time telling passengers about this signalling upgrade, because the new equipment will mean fewer faults and delays for people travelling across south London.
“While the major project has been timed for October half-term when generally there are fewer people travelling, it’s still important that everyone plans ahead, as they may need to make changes to their journeys and allow extra time.”
The following stations will have no Southern trains for seven days between Saturday October 26 and Friday November 1 inclusive:
- South Bermondsey
- Queens Road Peckham
- Peckham Rye
- East Dulwich
- North Dulwich
- Tulse Hill
- West Norwood
- Gipsy Hill
- Crystal Palace
- Birkbeck
- Beckenham Junction
The following stations will have no Thameslink trains between Saturday October 26 and Friday November 1:
- Tulse Hill
- Streatham
- Mitcham Eastfields
- Mitcham Junction
- Hackbridge
- Carshalton
- Sutton
- West Sutton
- Sutton Common
- St Helier
- Morden South
- South Merton
- Wimbledon Chase
- Wimbledon
- Haydens Road
- Tooting
The following stations will also have no London Overground train service for the same period to November 1:
- Queens Road Peckham
- Peckham Rye
- Denmark Hill
- Clapham High Street
- Wandsworth Road
