Gold at the end of your garden: do you have goldfinches? Let the RSPCA know in the Great Garden Birdwatch this month

It’s nearly time for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, a vital piece of citizen science which is all the time contributing to our knowledge of the changes going on in our environment, and its impact on the wildlife around us.

This year, the Big Garden Birdwatch is taking place on January 24 to 26.

There’s still time to sign-up to take part.

If you do so, you’ll be joining more than half a million people up and down the country who have said that they want to take part in what is the largest wildlife survey of in the world.

All you need to do is set aside one hour of your time over the course of the couple of days, observing the birds in your locality – you don’t even need to have a garden to take part.

“It’s time that you can share with nature, all while helping us to find out how our garden birds are faring,” the RSPB says.

Across Britain, more than 600,000 people took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2024, counting 9.7million birds.

House Sparrows took the top spot, but the RSPB says that counts of these chirpy birds are down by 60% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979.

“In fact, we’ve lost 38million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years,” the RSPB says.

“With birds facing so many challenges, it’s more important than ever to get involved in the Birdwatch. Every bird you do – or don’t – count will give us a valuable insight into how garden birds are faring.”
