Woman charged over 1978 death of Thornton Heath child

A 66-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the death of a five-year-old girl in Thornton Heath in 1978.

Janice Nix, of Rodenhurst Road in Clapham, was charged yesterday following an investigation by the Met’s homicide cold case team.

Nix is due to appear before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court today.

Nix was 19 years old when Andrea Bernard was hospitalised following an assault at address in Ashley Road, Thornton Heath, on June 6, 1978.

The young girl was initially treated at hospital in Croydon before being transferred to a specialist burns unit in East Grinstead. Bernard died as a result of her injuries on July 13, 1978.

According to the Met, “The offences were reported in September 2022 and an investigation was launched.

“Andrea and Nix were known to each other.”

Nix has also been charged with child cruelty in relation to offences towards another child, who was aged eight at the time.
