Purley no-way: Police have closed off a half-mile stretch of the A23 in both directions from Purley to Edgehill Road
A man was killed after he crashed his car into a tree on the Purley Way late last night.
The busy A23 was closed in both directions all morning, from Purley town centre to Edgehill Road, South Croydon, with buses on diversion, while the Metropolitan Police conducted an investigation.
The incident happened just after 11pm. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the driver was a man in his 20s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to call the Metropolitan Police on 101 or message @MetCC on X giving the reference 8366/7MAY.
This is the second long-term closure of the Purley Way because of a car crash in the space of a fortnight. The road was closed for most of the day on Saturday, April 26, when two vehicles collided, with both drivers requiring hospital treatment.
