BBC Radio 3 tunes in to Croydon Minster for evensong concert

All mic’d up: Croydon Minster last week, prepared for the latest BBC recording

BBC Radio 3’s broadcast of Choral Evensong tomorrow at 3pm will be from Croydon Minster, and feature the Minster’s acclaimed choir.

Choral Evensong is the BBC’s longest-running outside broadcast programme, having first aired 99 years ago.

The May 21 programme was recorded at the Minster last week. Justin Miller, the Minster’s director of music, conducted the choir with Stephen Disley playing the organ. The Vicar of Croydon, Rev Canon Dr Andrew Bishop intoned the responses.

Under Miller, the Minster’s music programme continues to develop its singers to a level where they can rub shoulders with the country’s large cathedral choirs. For this recording, with some singers unable to participate because of school exams, it gave an opportunity for some younger choristers to step up.

For many people who attend services at the Minster, the quality of the sound produced by the choir is memorable, and described as “inspirational” and “uplifting”.

Listeners to the broadcast will be able to hear the familiar hymn, Lord of the Dance sung to a dramatic arrangement by John Bertalot.

Those choristers and singers who remember the lifelong work of Martin How, both in Croydon Minster and the Royal College of Church Music, will be thrilled to hear that the choir will also be singing his setting of Psalm 99.

“The heavenly sounds of the broadcast will give another opportunity to celebrate Croydon on a national and international stage,” said one choir member.

After the broadcast, the programme will also be available on BBC Sounds for listeners worldwide.
