Labour councillor charged with sexual assault and exposure

Irfan Mohammed, the Lambeth councillor who was suspended by the Labour Party after a police arrest, was one of three men who appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court earlier this week charged with a series of offences in relation to an alleged assault on a woman.

Charged: Clapham Park Labour councillor Irfan Mohammed was arrested and charged by police

Mohammed was charged with engaging in controlling behaviour in an intimate relationship, sexual assault on a woman and exposure.

The Metropolitan Police released a statement which said: “Three men have been charged with a series of offences following a fast-paced investigation by detectives.”

In the statement, Mohammed was described as being aged 42, with an address in Peckham.

A second man, 38-year-old Kaymren Mohammed, of Copleston Road, Peckham, “was charged with engaging in controlling behaviour in an intimate relationship and three counts of assault by beating.

And Zairab Mohammed, 72, also of Copleston Road, was charged with engaging in controlling behaviour in an intimate relationship.

The police said that the three men will next appear in custody at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, August 11.

“The charges relate to an incident on Saturday July 12.

“Officers were called to Copleston Road, SE15, at 13:22hrs to reports of an alleged assault on a woman. She was not taken to hospital. Police attended and arrested three men at the scene. They were subsequently charged.”

Irfan Mohammed has been a Labour councillor at Brixton Town Hall since 2018, and was elected to represent Clapham Park ward in 2022. The Lambeth Labour group earlier this week said that they had suspended him and removed him from all responsibilities and council committees pending the police investigation.
