The Croydon Night of Dance 2025, Addiscombe, Tue Aug 19

The Croydon Night of Dance 2025, in aid of the Rotary Club of Croydon’s charities, is being staged on Tuesday August 19, promising “a night of music, mirth and magic, as a multitude of Morris maids and men do mingle and make merry”.

Starting from around 7pm, the Croydon Night of Dance will take place outside two of Croydon’s finest establishments, The Oval Tavern, on Oval Road, Addiscombe, and just round the corner on Leslie Park Road at the Builders Arms.

There’s more than a dozen sides of Morris dancers expected, from close to home – such as Old Palace Clog and the Wild Hunt Bedlam Morris – to groups from further afield, including St Albans, Blackheath and Ravensbourne, all with their own unique and peculiar versions of dance.

There’s food on sale at The Oval, where children are allowed inside until 9pm.

Dancing is expected to go through to about 10pm.

Among the dance groups performing is the North Wood Morris Men, based in Croydon, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025 of reviving this ancient and traditional form of dance.

There is some car parking available, but there are also road closures to allow for the performances, so people are advised to use public transport. The venues are a short walk from East Croydon Station’s rail and tram stops, while buses 197, 312, 367 and 410 stop at Leslie Grove (in Cherry Orchard Road); 289 stops at Lower Addiscombe Road/Davidson Road and also Morland Road, both on Lower Addiscombe Road (A222).

It is a charity fund-raising event for the Rotary Club of Croydon, whose nominated cause this year is Homestart Croydon, which provides invaluable support to young families in the borough, but has lost all its grant funding from the council. “They desperately need our support,” say the organisers.
