Night of dance: Morris groups from across south London, Surrey and Kent will be gathering in Addiscombe next week
The glorious local tradition, the annual Croydon Night of Dance, bobs and jingles across the streets of Addiscombe next Tuesday, September 8.
The celebration of Morris dance, maids and men, will be gathering with their bells and instruments outside The Oval Tavern from 7pm, where food and drink will be available for sale and children welcomed, even inside the pub, until 9pm.
Ancient tradition: some Morris groups are different to others…
Dancing troupes expected to take part include the North Wood Morris Men, Northwood Way, Old Palace Clog and Wild Hunt Bedlam.
Over the course of the evening, the dance groups will perform and process from Oval Road to the Builder’s Arms nearby on Leslie Park Road.
Both pubs are short walks from East Croydon Station and the Lebanon Road tram stop, and are within easy reach of buses 197, 312, 367 and 410 at Leslie Grove (off Cherry Orchard Road); and the 289 stop at Lower Addiscombe Road/Davidson Road and also Morland Road, both on Lower Addiscombe Road (A222).
The dancing display is free, though some of the Morris sides may be making collections for charity.
