Coulsdon bowling green re-opens after council cuts

Marlpit Lane bowling green in Coulsdon, after facing possible closure when Croydon Council withdrew funding for the sports venue in 2011, is once again open. The green can be used by experienced players to enjoy a game of bowls, or for novices to learn the game – a Commonwealth Games sport in Glasgow next year – on a summer’s evening.

Marlpit Lane bowling green in Coulsdon: open for business again

The bowling green is one of the facilities available in Coulsdon Memorial Ground Park, along with tennis courts and the putting green. It is extremely popular with local bowlers, and a game is usually in progress on summer days.

After the withdrawal of council funding, the condition of the green  deteriorated rapidly, making play impossible. But the Friends of Marlpit Bowling Green was formed in June last year with the aim of maintaining the green for public use; to maintain and staff the shed for equipment hire; and to preserve the environment and conditions around the park.

Now, after months of tireless work by the volunteers, the green has been restored to playing condition.
