Poppy Cafe, Coulsdon re-opening: Nov 9

The long-awaited Poppy Café at Coulsdon Memorial Ground will be opened officially on Saturday November 9.

The café will be holding an event from 10am to 3pm in the form of a Discovery Trail inviting people to find out more about our award-winning “Park to be Proud of” including:

Coulsdon Memorial Ground was opened in 1921 after being purchased in 1920 by the Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council and part by public subscription. The park is situated on a fairly steep slope. At the top of the hill there is a memorial with a rear wall bearing the names of the fallen, with the inscription “To the memory of the men of Coulsdon who fell in the Great War 1914-1919”. A bronze plaque was added bearing the words and in memory of those who fell in the World War 1939-1945.

The cafe has not been in use for several years.

“A lot of effort has gone into making the Memorial Ground a place to enjoy and with the opening of the Poppy Café we hope that it will be a great facility for local residents,” said a spokesman for the Old Coulsdon Residents’ Association.
