Croydon’s rubbish policy lays waste across the borough

CROYDON COMMENTARY: Rubbish on our streets and fly tipping is a borough-wide issue that is being ignored by Croydon Council, says CHARLOTTE DAVIES, the chair of the South Croydon Community Association

At any meeting of residents across the borough, fly tipping and the appalling state of our streets will be the first topic raised.

In South End there is fly tipping every day. Some of it is by local residents who have no bin access for their flats – why was planning permission allowed to build in such tight spaces?

And why do we not place communal bins in a space somewhere? It has to be better than bags of waste piling up attracting rats.

Some fly tipping is by local business owners who have either no bin space or have not paid for their waste to be taken away – it ought to be easy for the council to monitor this, the waste is very obviously addressed to the business or is very clearly related to one particular kind of business.

Then there is fly tipping by rogue builders passing through and just dumping it. They know that if no one is following up all the other mess then no one is possibly going to follow-up on fly tippers who are just passing through. Some fly tippers are rogue house clearance operators, who might charge a householder or business to clear a property or site and then, rather than pay the going rate at an official landfill site, dump the waste by dead of night confident in the knowledge that they will escape any sanction.

When residents complain the Croydon Council with specific details of who has caused the problem, they are told that they have to produce photographic evidence – most people just cannot do that safely.

So every day there is waste piling up on our streets and after a bit even the most vociferous residents just give up, there is no will to solve the problem.
