Candidate Philp features in Coulsdon debate with Pelling

The Coulsdon and Purley Debating Society begins its 2014 programme on Monday evening by pitching Chris Philp, the newly selected Conservative parliamentary candidate for Croydon South, against Andrew Pelling, the former Tory and Independent MP for Croydon Central who is standing for Labour in May’s local council elections.

The debate will allow residents – and you don’t need to be from Purley or Coulsdon to attend – to see in action for the first time what the Society describes rather presumptively as “our prospective MP” – Philp will inherit a 15,000 majority when he stands in place of one of Britain’s best claimers of expenses, “Sir” Tricky Dicky Ottaway, in Croydon South in 2015.

Philp will propose the motion: “Conservatism: the right direction for Croydon”.

Pelling is a repeat booking for the Coulsdon and Purley debaters, while until his selection late last year, millionaire Tory party donor Philp had previously shown greater interest in seeking election in constituencies in north London.

The showdown takes place on Monday evening, January 6, at the Old Coulsdon Day Centre (Grange Park), Coulsdon Road, Old Coulsdon at 8pm.

The event is open to everyone and anyone can take part in the debate.
