Walsh drums up support to help bring jazz to the high street

The Streets is an Arts Council-backed project which aims to bring live music and performance to the high streets of six outer London boroughs this summer, including Croydon.

Internationally renowned percussionist Ben Walsh will be drumming up interest in music in South Norwood on the evening of July 28, when there will also be performances from local musicians.

The idea of the scheme, which is funded by Arts Council England and the Mayor of London, is to animate local streets, giving residents and visitors the chance to see and take part in something new and spectacular, using their communal space – the high street – as its stage. The organisers promise, “From dawn until dusk there will be mass percussion events, twilight takeovers in empty shops and musical gems to be discovered in cafés, bars, corner shops and markets.”

Music and event producer, Serious, is working with Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Wandsworth, Richmond and Kingston-upon-Thames, as well as Croydon, starting next Thursday, July 9 in Kingston-upon-Thames when Walsh will be performing in the market place.

Walsh is a ground-breaking drummer from Australia, who has created a Drum Wheel, made from recycled material. Next week’s launch in Kingston will be partnered with the International Youth Arts Festival and will also include performances by a number of local artists, while The Streets project will also continue through the autumn as part of the London Jazz Festival.
