Another chance to learn of the terror of the Zeppelin raids

People interested in Croydon’s history have a chance to sign-up for a talk about how the town centre was among the first places to suffer aerial bombing in the First World War Zeppelin raids.

Ian Castle will be giving the highly recommended talk, organised by the Historic Croydon Airport Trust and held at the Museum of Croydon on Tuesday, April 24, from 6pm.

On the night of October 13, 1915, Germany finally appeared to have achieved her goal — a Zeppelin squadron attack on London— as four airships bore down on the capital. The raid did not turn out as planned, and that night, for the first time, German bombs fell on Croydon.

Ian Castle tells the story of that night, of the raid on Croydon and the fate that befell the crew of L14 — the “Croydon Zeppelin”.

Castle is a leading historian of the German First World War air raids on Britain.

His book on the London raids, The First Blitz – Bombing London in the First World War, was well received and Zeppelin Onslaught, his first book in a three-volume history of the air raids, was published last month.
