Wetherspoons boss’s Croydon no-show on his Brexit pub crawl

Tim Martin, the boss of the JD Wetherspoons pub chain, failed to turn up for his own Brexit talk at one of his pubs in Croydon this afternoon.

Martin, the founder and chairman of the cut-price pub chain, was due to give a talk on his reasons for supporting Brexit – and opposing Prime Minister Theresa May’s withdrawal deal – at the Skylark on South End.

The visit was one date in a grand pub crawl around 100 ‘Spoons pubs announced by the outspoken Martin, where he was expected to talk about the “huge economic advantages” which he claims a no-deal Brexit might bring.

The benefits of Brexit…

The event appeared to have drawn a decent crowd, though how many were there to hear Martin drone on, and how many were just there for the cheap booze on a Friday lunchtime was hard to determine.

Martin failed to show up at the busy Croydon pub, however.

Instead, the management placed a specially printed sign by the bar – perhaps a cunning ruse, hoping that once they’d got people in, they would feel obliged to buy a drink.

The sign read: “Dear customers, our chairman Tim Martin had to change his schedule due to other commitments. Therefore he won’t be visiting this pub.

“He’d heartily apologise for the inconvenience.”
