Amity Community has set itself the mission to provide grassroots support to families and individuals across south London by “doing things on the ground and avoiding long bureaucratic processes”.
Formed in August this year, Amity Community has already distributed hundreds of pounds to local people in need of help.
This Saturday’s Free Patty Day is a way of easing the cost of living crisis, while providing some hot, nutritious food on a winter’s day.

Samuel Baleera, a co-founder of Amity Community, said: “This has been a year of unprecedented difficulty for everyone, and Croydon has also been affected by all the challenges affecting the nation, and many families have been at the receiving end of these difficult living conditions.
“Following the pandemic, we established Amity Community to provide relief to our local community in Croydon. It has become clear that it is key to place communities at the centre of governance and grassroot support, to tackle shared challenges and support each other.”
Baleera sees the Free Patty Day as a way of helping to create a “sense of community spirit and belonging to help those who are struggling”.
Brixton Caribbean Food is at 21 London Rd, Croydon, CR0 2RE.
Patties are available from 10am and available for everyone. “All that an individual has to do is to request an ‘Amity Patty’,” the organisers say. “There will be enough stock to cater to the many people that decide to come through their doors. But of course, the earlier you can get there, the better.”
