Former councillor Peter Champion has died

Peter Champion, a councillor for Whitehorse Manor ward from 1990 to 1998 and an Alderman of the London Borough of Croydon, died on Monday.

The former Labour councillor had been unwell for a number of years and had been cared for by his wife, Toni Letts, a councillor in Selhurst ward.

Peter Champion topped the poll in both his winning council elections and was a back bencher during the first ever Labour administration in Katharine Street in 1994.

“Peter will be sadly missed by family and friends alike,” Tony Newman, the leader of Croydon’s Labour group, said today.

“He was a dedicated local councillor and was a key member of the team that helped secure that first ever historic Labour administration in Croydon in 1994.”
