Peter Champion, a councillor for Whitehorse Manor ward from 1990 to 1998 and an Alderman of the London Borough of Croydon, died on Monday.

Peter Champion topped the poll in both his winning council elections and was a back bencher during the first ever Labour administration in Katharine Street in 1994.

“Peter will be sadly missed by family and friends alike,” Tony Newman, the leader of Croydon’s Labour group, said today.

“He was a dedicated local councillor and was a key member of the team that helped secure that first ever historic Labour administration in Croydon in 1994.”

Peter was a friend and a colleague on the Council when I was first elected in 1994. Both Toni and Peter were mentors to me in those early years. He had a great sense of fairness and equality for all in his Council work and his job looking after the most vulnerable members of our society. Peter will be missed by all who knew him, especially his children and Toni.
