Champ! Winston McKenzie’s fame spreads to Metroknobbers

The south London blogosphere’s regular podcast, Metroknobbers, has it all this month, with Emily “White Van” Thornberry, now the former shadow attorney general, plus UKIP’s favourite ex-boxer, Winston McKenzie, and even a guest appearance by someone best described as the Phantom Pisser of Purley.

Produced by Lambeth blogger Jason Cobb and his Greenwich hyperlocal colleague Darryl Chamberlain, this month they invited Inside Croydon’s editor, Steven Downes, to explain McKenzie’s latest eccentric activities and to celebrate the second anniversary of Steve Reed being elected as the MP for Lambeth South.

Warming to his themes, Downes did get somewhat over-excited when talking about the 2016 GLA elections; references to “Three Jobs” were, of course, made with Steve O’Connell, the London Assembly member for Croydon and Sutton, in mind, and not Steve Reed.

Chamberlain explains in the programme how he is working on a campaign to save an under-threat music venue in north London, Islington’s Buffalo Bar, and how impressed he was by a local meeting with the MP, Thornberry, and her willingness to assist the cause. “She was everything you would want from a local MP,” Chamberlain said of Thornberry, who’d attended the meeting despite her shadow cabinet career disintegrating around her at that time.

The broadcast was rudely interrupted when Downes spotted from his eerie at Inside Croydon Towers a pedestrian pausing to take a pee in a neighbour’s front garden. It was too dark for any of the pictures to be of any use as evidence, not that they would ever be suitable for publication on a family-friendly website such as this. But just another typical happening in “clean and green” Croydon.
