Council officer leaves full activity programme at Wandle Park

Wandle Park has issued an updated list of the activities and shows being put on there over the coming months.

The revised listing, reproduced in full below, was one of the last actions of Tom Smith as the council’s much-appreciated and very active volunteer organiser, before he left his job last week.

The extensive listing is, in many respects, a tribute to the hard work conducted by Smith and the enthusiastic volunteers who have homed in on the park since it was re-sculpted and re-opened a few years ago.

There’s some hope that Smith will be replaced by the council, to keep the momentum going among the park’s various activity groups.

Many of the activities benefit from the funding provided by Lottery grants given to the park and the support of TCV, The Conservation Volunteers, who lead three conservation days in the park to give a helping hand to the wildlife that have found a new home in the pond and the revitalised River Wandle as it flows through the park.

As well as a programme of guided heritage walks throughout the year, the CODA open-air theatre in the summer and children’s activities throughout the year, much of them centred around the bandstand, there’s also community gardening every Sunday from 10am.

And in the spring, there will be a horticultural training course held in the community garden, aimed at gardening beginners to give them the confidence and skills to garden at home, all leading to a AQA level 2 certificate.
