A government policy shift towards digital immigration checks and using eVisas from 2025 means that all Biometric Residence Permits and most Biometric Residence Cards will expire on December 31.
“Individuals whose leave extends beyond December 2024 may face challenges in proving their immigration status, potentially affecting their ability to travel in and out of the UK,” a spokesperson for the law centre said.
“For many, this transition may be particularly difficult, especially those without smartphones, limited internet access, language barriers, digital illiteracy, or disabilities.”
SWLLC will provide assistance in setting up UKVI accounts, verifying identities and registering ID documents with UKVI accounts. The aim is to help people smoothly adapt to the new digital immigration system.
This free service is available to anyone holding a Biometric Residence Permit, Biometric Residence Card, or with a pending application for either.
SWLLC is “reaching out” to existing clients who may need help with this transition.

- People can also attend the weekly drop-in session at the Croydon office every Tuesday from 10am to 4pm.
SWLLC notes: “Immigration advice is not included as part of this service. The support is strictly focused on assisting with the eVisa transition.
“The transition to eVisas may be challenging for many, but we are here to offer guidance and help people navigate this process.”
