The Stop the Incinerator Campaign needs to raise £5,000 by Monday to be able to afford to continue the fight to prevent Sutton and Croydon councils allowing industrialists Viridor to build and operate a waste incinerator on Metropolitan Open Land at Beddington Farmlands, on the Sutton-Croydon borough boundary.
And YOU can play a part.
The campaigners are asking residents, businesses and all other interested parties across Sutton, Croydon and south London to dig deep – possibly not for the first time – to allow them to continue the fight through the courts, after the desperately disappointing judgement was handed down yesterday following their Judicial Review.
Inside Croydon readers came to the rescue last month with the cash to allow the case to be brought at all. The need now for donations is just as great, and even more urgent.
Why is it important to stop the building of this industrial plant in the midst of a densely populated part of London, with homes, schools and hospitals? The environmental, health, traffic, recycling and wildlife arguments have been discussed and outlined at length on Inside Croydon over the past four years. The full archive can be seen here.
A legal appeal against that decision needs to be lodged by Monday. At the same, the campaigners need to apply to the High Court for a Protective Costs Order to limit the costs from the other side. All of this costs in legal time and expertise.
“Let us all put our hands in our pockets again and ensure that Shasha Khan’s costs are fully met by our contributions,” said Charlotte Davies, the chair of one local community group, the South Croydon Community Association.
“Shasha has stood tall and spoken out for all of us that want to breathe clean air and see a fair society.”
Lots of small donations all add up, and help to pay the lawyers just as much as generous larger payments. But the campaign needs the funds speedily.
