Lee Townsend, the Lenses of Croydon founder, presented Phillips with a Lifetime Membership Award, recognising his unparalleled photography contributions and unwavering support for the grassroots organisation, which has been supporting aspiring photographers since 2012.
Jamaican-born photographer Phillips has left an indelible mark on the world of photography.
Best known for capturing the vibrant and poignant stories of Notting Hill during the era of West Indian migration in the 1960s and 1970s, his lens has also chronicled film stars, student protests and the profoundly emotional traditions of London’s Afro-Caribbean community.
With works exhibited at the Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum of London, “Charlie’s artistry transcends borders,” Townsend said. Phillips’ work has appeared in publications such as Stern, Harper’s Bazaar, Life and Vogue magazine.
In 2022, Phillips’ legacy was recognised when he was appointed OBE for services to photography and the arts.
“We are deeply grateful for Charlie’s contributions not only to the world of art but also to the thriving community of creatives supported by Lenses of Croydon,” Townsend said.
“His passion continues to inspire generations of photographers to tell their stories through the lens.
“Here’s to a true legend and his lifetime of extraordinary work!”
