Despite the uncertain economic outlook, especially for retailers, there has been announcements of two major shops coming to Croydon, with the opening of John Lewis at Home on the Purley Way and electronics retailer Best Buy coming to town.
John Lewis received 1,300 applications for the 220 posts it is creating in its focused furniture, furnishing accessories, electrical and home technology store, due to open in late summer.
The Purley Way is just the second of the kind to be opened by the nationwide chain of department stores and Waitrose supermarkets in a business with a £7.4 billion annual turnover.
John Lewis is the UK’s largest example of worker co-ownership, where all 70,000 staff are partners in the business.
Meanwhile, Best Buy confirmed this week that it will open in Croydon in the autumn. Their first store opened in Thurrock last month.
“We’re here to make buying technology simple, exciting and tailored to each of our customers,” Paul Antoniadis, CEO of Best Buy branded operations, said.
“We look forward to offering the ultimate in home entertainment technology and installations, and we plan to keep bringing our customers the best that technology can offer in every part of our stores.”
