Greece is the word for Tricky Dicky Ottaway

Inside Croydon‘s loyal reader has been in touch, responding to our appeal for sightings of Croydon South’s “hard working” MP Tricky Dicky Ottaway (that’s “hard working” in the sense of making sure he claims tens of thousands a year of taxpayers’ money in parliamentary allowances).

Our correspondent reckons they spotted Ottaway sunning himself on a beach on the Greek resort island of Paxos. Cue jokes about it being a message to tax-payers to get stuffed; or suggestions that it is the closest that the Tory MP will ever get to being grilled by Paxo on Newsnight.

Is anyone able to confirm the sighting?

If true, we trust that Ottaway enjoyed his holiday. After all, Tricky Dicky works so hard, he must have needed a break: according to the public accountability website TheyWorkForYou, Ottaway made just two utterances in Parliament since July.

Ottaway has hardly been busy in his constituency, either, if his own website is anything to go by: he – or a pliant lacky undoubtedly paid for out of a parliamentary allowance that Ottaway will doubtless claim is entirely justified – has posted just a single news story in nearly three months.

And meanwhile, despite solemn promises of openness and transparency after the MPs’ expenses scandal when Tricky Dicky desperately sought re-selection from his own, local Conservative Association, he has failed to update his expenses information on his own website since November 2009.

Tricky is supposed to be staging a constituency surgery today, Wednesday September 29, at his office at 36 Brighton Road, Purley. But just don’t turn up: you must have an appointment, made by calling Ottaway’s Westminster office on 020 7219 1590.

Do give him a call, and send him Inside Croydon‘s best wishes. And let us know if Ottaway turns up for the surgery – after all, what with the very important business of the Tory party conference in Birmingham next week, today’s surgery could be the last chance that Tricky Dicky’s constituents get to see their expensive MP for some time.
