Films, fiction and a finale fair feature in 2011 Purley Festival

The first Purley Festival gets under way with an opening ceremony at Riddlesdown School (Honister Heights, Purley, Surrey, CR8 1EX) next Monday, June 27, from 11am, when there will be an art exhibition and music from a jazz band, a samba band, a string group and choir.

  • Africa United (June 27, 7.30pm, at Christ Church) and the BAFTA-nominated Exam (June 30, 7.30pm, at Christ Church) will be shown during the Purley Film Festival, and Mark Blaney and Stuart Hazeldene, the writers and producers, will be at a question and answer sessions after the screenings.
  • Heat 1 of Purley’s Got Talent will be staged on Monday evening at the Jolly Farmers, seeking the next Adele.
  • There will be an exhibition of local artists at Opal Gallery, Brighton Road, from June 30 to July 2. Local Artists are invited to display a painting or paintings and should contact Sharmaine Guthrie at the gallery to discuss displaying one or more of their works – 0208 668 8606 contact@opalpictureframesandgallery.com

Other events planned include talks on the history of Purley and with local author Christopher Bowden, there’s a photography exhibition, and regular music sessions at the Jolly Farmers pub.
