Carshalton jazz club really goes with a swing

BELLA BARTOCK’s had a busy couple of weeks, changing from her evening dress and donning her corduroys and flip-flops for a visit to a local jazz club

At the end of last month, we visited the excellent Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton for an exciting evening of big band jazz performed by a well-rehearsed group playing arrangements from every era.

Featured soloists were: Ronnie Hughes and Nick Stevenson, trumpets, Dave Gelly and John Lee, reeds, and Al Nicholls, baritone sax.

Carshalton Jazz Club meets monthly on Tuesdays. The next two meetings are: Tuesday October 18, when Graham Hughes’ Sunshine Kings will be playing; and Tuesday November 22, which will feature John Petters’ Swing Band.

Also worth a visit is The Lord Napier, 111 Beulah Road, Thornton Heath CR7 8JG on the first and third Thursday of each month, where The New Delta Big Band is playing.
