NON-LEAGUE NEWS: Croydon Athletic pulled off a surprise victory over high-flyers Badshot Lea in the EL Records Premier Cup third round at the Arena in midweek.
The 3-2 victory was secured over a side flying high in a league above Athletic. Badshot Lea have only lost two games in their Combined Counties League this season.
Paul Smith, Croydon Athletic’s chairman, told Inside Croydon that he was delighted with the result against the Godalming-based team, even though Badshot were missing four key players to injury and suspension.
Edward Cardona scored Athletic’s winner in the 84th minute, adding to Lee Jansen’s 11th minute penalty, when the visitors were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men for the last-man challenge. Following a Badshot equaliser after 25 minutes, Cardona gave the key assist for a Kieran Burrell tap-in to restore Athletic’s lead in the 35th minute. But Badshot Lea equalised for a second time just a minute later, setting up a tense second half.
Badshot Lea face another Croydon side today: Croydon FC travel to the Godalming FC Weycourt ground in a Combined Counties League Premier Division fixture. The match is free entry to all.
At Croydon Arena today, Athletic host calamity side CB Hounslow, who languish at the bottom of the Combined Counties League Division One with just one win and a goal difference of minus-40.
Whyteleafe face a long journey down to Deal Town in the Kent League where a close match between the fourth and sixth placed sides is expected.
