The first “annual” general meeting of the Save the David Lean Cinema Campaign will be held at Braithwaite Hall, Croydon Clocktower, on Tuesday, September 15, starting at 7.30pm.
The meeting will be followed by a free screening of the 1948 movie, Letter From an Unknown Woman.
Though formed four years ago, this will be the first time that the Campaigners have held a general meeting, and it follows the formation of a Community Interest Company, or CIC.
“At the meeting, in addition to reports on our work and our finances, there will be an opportunity to air your views and ask questions about our current and possible future activities,” a message to those on the Campaign’s circulation list says.
There will be an election for 12 committee members. Which sort of prompts the question why the post-meeting movie selected wasn’t Twelve Angry Men (and women).

Letter From an Unknown Woman (made in 1948, certificate U and with a 83-minute running time) is set in Vienna in 1900. The Campaign team says that, “This is perhaps the finest American film from famed European director Max Ophüls.
“Joan Fontaine stars as a young woman who falls in love with a concert pianist (Louis Jourdan). ‘An atmospheric and unsettling mix of European style and Hollywood muscle, this is a beautifully shot and thought-provoking film about lost love’ (Film 4).”
