Coulsdon Commons seeking volunteers – and walkers

There are plenty of organised and guided walks on offer in and around the borough over the coming holiday period, most of them free, offering excellent opportunities to burn off some of the seasonal excess and to find out more about the area in which you live.

Riddlesdown signThe wardens of Coulsdon Commons are also offering plenty of volunteering opportunities in the new year, to work in the open air and help to keep an important part of the Green Belt at its best with conservation and wildlife projects.

On Monday, December 28, they are staging a Bank Holiday ramble.

Starting at the Riddlesdown car park and walking just over a mile to the restricted access quarry, this walk offers a “behind the scene” tour. The walk is a round trip taking two-and-a-half hours, with a gentle incline to the quarry followed by the opportunity to take in the wonderful views from it and its special geology.

Well-behaved dogs allowed if on leads.

Stout walking boots recommended. Booking is essential: please call 01372 279083 in office hours.

The City of London wardens are also organising volunteer work gangs across the seven areas of common land that they manage, including Kenley, Farthing Down and New Hill. The work groups provide a “green gym” opportunity for anyone with New Year resolutions to fulfill, as well as a good chance to socialise and help in the community.

The next volunteering tasks are:
