A busy community group has turned over a new leaf, as GUY CLAPPERTON explains
Interested in joining a book group? The Page Turners could be for you. We meet on the second Wednesday of every month in Yeha Noha, Station Road, SE25, and don’t charge anything (although we do urge you to buy some refreshment on the way in).
Founded last year by Lyndsey Claire, it was handed to Lyn Osterholzer and myself when Lyndsey’s work took her to the West country where she’s setting up a sister group.
The format is really simple. You read the book and you turn up ready for a natter. We’ve read three books so far – The Buried Giant by Kashuo Ishiguro, The Taxidermist’s Daughter by Kate Mosse and From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming.
The link is that there’s no link – we just want to read widely and throw our thoughts around. The current runners are keen not to involve people in spending money, so we’ll be aiming for books that are easily available from public libraries or free download.
We’re a mix of ages and genders and keen to mix it up even more, so if you’re at all interested in books and fancy an hour or so’s chat about them over a coffee, you’d be welcome.
The next meeting is on February 10 and we’re discussing Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh.
