The Shirley Community Centre Association, a registered charity, started English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes in September 2014 with the help of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).
The classes have been attended by students from three continents and 16 countries, and many who have attended the courses can now communicate in English in their daily life and support their children in school.
Students also gain the skills in order to study further or to obtain a job, or to progress in their present work.
Courses may be free if students want to develop their literacy and numeracy skills and are in receipt of income-based benefits.
