Take to the air at Streatham Common Kite Day, May 14

The annual Streatham Common Kite Day will be staged for a 19th time on Sunday, May 14.

Last year’s Kite Day on Streatham Common attracted flyers and families of spectators from across London

The day-long event is London’s only free family friendly kite festival, which combines world-class kite displays with the opportunity to fly your own.

Thousands of people flocked to Streatham Common last year to see the kite displays, fly a kite and sample the delicious food and drink on offer at the stalls. The organisers expect similar numbers again this year.

The event features kite flying by experts including Team Spectrum – a father and son team dancing their kites to music in routines that astound and astonish; the Flying Fish – a husband and wife double act who first flew at their local common; and NASAman – whose kite helps lift him up into the sky. But not quite into space.

And Streatham Common Kite Day is not just for the experts, with the public invited to bring their own kites or buy one at the kite shops on site.

“Streatham Kite Day is London’s only kite festival and has been drawing crowds for nearly 20 years,” said Richard Payne, from the Friends of Streatham Common, which organises the event.

“We think this year’s event will be the best ever – we’ve got more kite displays, more food stalls and a bigger bar and kite shop.

“You’ll have a great time at Kite Day and, most amazing of all, the event is run by volunteers and any profits made are put back into restoring and maintaining the Common and its gardens.”

Kite Day offers a range of food stands, including a hog roast, award-winning Streatham fish specialist and deli Fish Tale, a bar run by The Inkspot Brewery, and live music from local band Groovessence. There is also plenty of room for picnics.

Once the food has digested there are bouncy castles and face painting for children. Community groups are well represented with stalls for the curious visitor keen to find out more about the area or join one of the area’s local groups or societies.
