Brains of Purley fundraiser that isn’t taking the PPP

A local cancer charity is recruiting the brains and brawn of Purley to raise extra cash, in a bid to break last year’s £6,000 fund-raising record.

Charity volunteers want to turn Purley purple

The South East Cancer Help Centre (SECHC) is calling on local shops, businesses, schools, organisations and residents to hold purple-themed fundraising events or activities and share their efforts on social media as part of its third Paint Purley Purple campaign.

The campaign will run from September 15 to 22.

SECHC Fundraiser Eleanor Appleton said, “Thanks to the help of local shops, businesses and schools we raised over £6,000 last year and we are hoping to more than double that figure this year.

“We want as many local people as possible to get involved. We would love all the shops and offices to show a big splash of purple for the week and hold an event of their own to raise money or join in the events we are organising. We have loads of ideas and are happy to help support anyone who wants to help. We are looking for businesses to sponsor or match fund events and for anyone who can spare time to sign up to help with various volunteer opportunities around Purley.”

This year’s event sees the introduction of the Brains of Purley Quiz Night, where local people and businesses compete to show why Purley is a hub of intellectual and business excellence (seriously, that’s what the press release says), while the Brawn of Purley Gym Challenge shows that Purley people are some of the fittest.

Local schools are being encouraged to hold mufti days and knitters are being invited to take part in a secret mission. The whole week concludes with a spectacular black-tie fundraising gala dinner.

Jennifer Mollett, the SECHC chair, said, “As we receive no government funding, events like this are our lifeblood and it is a great way for Purley to support its local charity whilst having fun. We are hoping to see everyone wear a splash of purple that week and I am hoping to meet as many people as possible at the events being held.”

Tesco, Andrews, Plan Insurance, Pursers Opticians, Diane Hairdressers, Ghost Hairdressers, Cycle Republic, Santander, Get Fired and The Pear Tree are among those already on board.
