One of Croydon’s biggest pubs, the Skylark on South End, has been forced to close for 48 hours to undergo an urgent “deep clean” following an outbreak of illness among its staff.

The Wetherspoons pub was supposed to host a Brexit lecture from the company’s founder, Tim Martin, recently, though sources say that the idea of the florid-faced Martin visiting is not believed to have caused the delayed onset of puking that befell the pub’s staff. The shutters went up on Monday, with a Wetherspoons spokesman teling Inside Croydon today that they expect the pub to re-open tomorrow.
“Three staff had a bout of sickness, and it was thought advisable to close the pub and undertake an urgent deep clean as a precaution,” the spokesman for the pub chain said.
No one required hospital treatment, according to Wetherspoons. “The affected staff will only come back to work when they have fully recovered.”
The Skylark is part of the “Restaurant Quarter”, south of the High Street. Always busy, it offers the usual JD Wetherspoons formula of cheap real ales and money-off food offers that has proved such a successful formula.
It received a top mark of 5 when last subjected to a food and health check, though that was in November 2017.
