Rail lines from East Croydon to Gatwick closed all Sunday

Anyone planning to jet away from Gatwick Airport this weekend is advised to allow extra time for their journey. Lots of it.

No trains and slow trains: there will be no rail services between East Croydon and Gatwick this Sunday

Engineering work is taking place between East Croydon and Gatwick Airport, closing all lines.

The works mean there will be a bus replacement service between East Croydon and Gatwick from late on Saturday night, January 11, and all through Sunday January 12.

National Rail services will run on a diverted route from Victoria, departing every 30minutes. Alternatively, trains will run between London Bridge and East Grinstead to connect with a replacement bus service to the airport. This engineering work will also affect trains to Brighton and the Sussex coast.

Network Rail says the engineering works will affect Gatwick Express – there will be no service at all on Sunday – and Thameslink between Bedford and Gatwick Airport, affecting services to Three Bridges, Horsham and Brighton.

Southern trains between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport, as well as to Reigate, Horsham, Brighton and along the south coast to Portsmouth Harbour, and between London Victoria and Eastbourne and Hastings, and between London Bridge and Caterham, and also between Purley and Tattenham Corner will all be affected.

According to Network Rail from approximately 11.45pm on January 11 until end of service, buses will replace trains between:

  • East Croydon and Gatwick Airport/Horsham
  • East Croydon/Purley and Caterham/Tattenham Corner
  • Redhill and Reigate
  • Redhill and Tonbridge
  • Additionally, the 23:36 Tonbridge to Redhill service will not run

On Sunday January 12:

All day on Sunday, no trains will run between East Croydon and Redhill/Gatwick Airport/Reigate/Tonbridge/Caterham/Tattenham Corner.

A reduced service will run between London Victoria and East Croydon.

No Gatwick Express services will run.

A direct, but diverted, Southern train service will run between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport, calling at Clapham Junction. this service will have extended service times.

A reduced train service will run between London Victoria and East Croydon.

Replacement bus services will run between:

  • Gatwick Airport/Three Bridges and East Grinstead
  • East Croydon and Redhill
  • Redhill and Gatwick Airport
  • Redhill and Reigate/Tonbridge
  • Purley and Tattenham Corner
  • Additionally, the 00:23 Redhill to Tonbridge service will not run, and the 01:10 London Victoria to Brighton service will be diverted to terminate at East Grinstead

On Thameslink:

  • All day on Sunday, buses will replace trains between East Croydon and Gatwick Airport.
  • Services between Bedford and Three Bridges/Brighton will run between Bedford and East Croydon only.
  • Services between Cambridge and Brighton will run between Royston and London Kings Cross only
  • Services between Bedford and Horsham will run between Bedford and East Croydon, and between Horsham and Gatwick Airport
